Mechanical Properties of Wood

This course is designed to provide Professional Engineers with a thorough understanding of wood and several properties of this material as described by The Wood Handbook. This course describes wood as an orthotropic material used in construction and explains why it is chosen over other materials such as concrete, steel, and plastic. Thorough descriptions of the elastic, strength, and vibration properties of wood will be discussed, as well as, the strength properties such as hardness, compression, torsion and creep rupture. The course will examine the natural and unnatural growth characteristics of wood, such as, slope of grain, annual ring orientation, knots, bird pecks, compressions failures, and pitch pockets and how they affect the use of wood in construction. ( Self Paced Class)
